By Air: The domestic airport situated at Madurai is about 15 kilometers from the heart of the city off the National Highway no. 47. This domestic airport has a very good connectivity and major cities of India like Bangalore, Chennai, Tirchy, Thiruvananthapuram and Coimbatore are reachable from here. The airlines that cater their services here include; Indian Airlines, Kingfisher Red, Jet Airways, Paramount Airways and Spicejet. You can hire a taxi from the airport to reach the city. The closest international airport from Madurai is Tiruchirappalli International Airport located at Trichy. Madurai Airport is under consideration of converting it into an international airport.

By Rail: Madurai Railway Station is well positioned right in the heart of the city. Madurai falls on the Madurai-Tiruchirappalli-Dindigul-Quilon line. Being a chief railway junction on Southern Railway Route, Madurai is directly connected by rail with important cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Howrah, Bangalore, Chennai, Tirunelveli, Rameswaram, Coimbatore, Kanyakumari, etc. A train travel between Chennai and Madurai takes about 7 to 8 hours if you take ‘The Vaigai Express’, the super fast day train.

By Road: Madurai is well connected by road. National Highways numbered 7, 49 and 45B pass through Madurai. These highways are under up gradation as a part of National highway development program and they are going to be converted into multi lined highways. Tamil Nadu state transport buses connect Madurai to all the major cities in and around the state. Ernakulam, Trivandram, Bangalore, Mysore, etc cities of neighboring states are also easily accessible via road from Madurai. Number of ordinary as well as luxury buses provide services. Most overnight and inter-state buses terminate at Mattuthavani Bus stand, one of the five major bus stands in Madurai. Close to the Periyar bus stand one can board private buses too.
