The climate of Madurai is typical Deccan plateau kind. The weather remains hot and dry all round the year.

Summer ranges between May and June. May is the hottest month of summer. The maximum temperature recorded in summer is 40°c and the minimum temperature is about 26°c. Sometimes the mercury even crosses the mark of 43°c. It is recommended to wear cotton during summer season.

Monsoons officially ranges between July and October. And North-East Monsoon visits Madurai after October till December. Apart from that sudden rainfalls through out the year are quite common and tourists are always advised to carry an umbrella along. The average annual rainfall in Madurai is approximately 85 cm.

Winterin Madurai extends from December to February. The temperature in winter ranges between 18°c and 30° c. Winter is the most pleasant season and the best one for tourism purposes as all the major festivals of Madurai are celebrated in winter.
